Discover Fu Zhuan, the legendary Chinese brick tea that stands apart from everything else in the Hive through one remarkable feature: break the brick open and you’ll find the dark leaves speckled with tiny golden dots, like stars in a night sky. These “golden flowers” are a prized, harmless culture that develops inside the brick as it ages — and in China, the more golden flowers a brick shows, the more treasured it is. In the cup, they give the tea a smooth, mellow character with a gentle sweetness often compared to apricots.
Fu Zhuan is among the most sought-after dark teas because of the skill its creation demands. Unlike ordinary teas, which are simply dried and packed, Fu Zhuan goes through an extra step called “flowering”: the pressed bricks rest in carefully kept warmth and humidity for weeks, coaxing the golden blooms to appear all through the tea. For centuries this was so difficult to achieve that it only worked in one Chinese town — and the finished bricks were carried by caravan along the old tea roads to Tibet and Mongolia, where they were prized enough to be used as money. Brewing is easy: flake a few pieces off the brick, use fully boiling water, and re-steep many times — the flavor is dark, smooth, and warming, with no bitterness at all.

Decided to try this Fu Zhuan brick since the shop’s other teas have been great. It’s definetly different, in a good way. The earthy taste took some getting used to but it’s not bad at all, and the cup is exactly what I was after. Took a few tries to get the steeping time right but now I’m really happy with it

genuine Fu Zhuan brick tea
Without a doubt, genuine Fu Zhuan is the most complex dark tea I’ve tasted. I think it comes down to the traditional fermentation and the golden flowers that develop inside the brick. It also seems to carry some of the sweetness you usually find in aged whites and oolongs.
I know people who grow and trade tea in China, and this shop is the real deal with great pricing for domestic orders.
Everything is completely on point. I’ve found where I’m buying my dark tea when I don’t want to wait months for an international shipment!

quality has been steady every time
I was a bit unsure about trying this Fu Zhuan Brick at first because I’m usually picky about dark teas, but I’m really glad I did. The taste isn’t bad at all – actually way better than I expected. It’s pretty smooth and doesn’t leave that funky aftertaste some aged teas have.
